The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the UK National Standards Body (NSB). It publishes standards and provides a range of books, self-assessment tools, conferences and training services. It also represents UK economic and social interests in European and international standards organisations.
[edit] Quality and functionality of balconies
BS 8579:2020 addresses design recommendations for balconies and terraces in medium and high-rise buildings. It also contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on making cities more sustainable through better design.
One of the primary goals of BS 8579:2020 is to encourage the construction of superior balconies and terraces that are safer and more inclusive. The Standard provides guidance to local housing associations, local authorities, designers, architects, engineers, specialists and product manufacturers. It covers:
- Spatial arrangement and wind effects.
- Inclusive design.
- Safety considerations.
- Drainage and weathering effects.
- Thermal and acoustic considerations.
BS 8579:2020 is available to download for a fee from the BSI website https://shop.bsigroup.com/ProductDetail?pid=000000000030380152
